Virat Kohli has become the face of the Indian Cricket. But, it all began a decade ago when he led India to the U-19 World Cup victory. Although, he started as a successful cricketer right from the beginning, he soon lost his way due to his growing success. It impacted his health, he had put on weight due to continuous drinking and partying. Coupled with a dip in performance in 2012, he had a reckoning when he told himself “you can’t look like this if you want to be a professional cricketer.” He then decided to level up his fitness and with rigorous hard work has become one of the most inspiring and fittest athletes of India. So, how did he achieve it? Let us have a look at five healthy lifestyle choices that he follows diligently.
This comes at the top of the list and is something irreplaceable! There was a time when Virat Kohli was gaining weight, and coupled with a dip in performance in 2012, he had a reckoning where he told himself “you can’t look like this if you want to be a professional cricketer.” He then decided to level up his fitness. He hits the gym for 2 hours, 5 days a week. There are several videos of him hitting iron on YouTube and Instagram in case you need a boost of motivation!
Exercise has to be complemented with a proper diet. There was a time when he was a glutton, but things have changed. He avoids junk food and prefers home-cooked food. His breakfast includes, omelette, spinach, nut butter, fruits and 3-4 cups of green tea. Lunch has chicken with green veggies and potatoes whereas dinner is limited to seafood. Virat revealed that during his fitness building time, he didn’t have the famous butter chicken and naan for four years.
Cricket is a glamorous domain, India has been winning quite a lot in recent years and victories mean late night wild parties, but not for Virat! He is committed to early to bed, early to rise philosophy.
While you have to follow a strict regime of diet and food, you should also allow yourself a cheat day when you can eat anything you want. This can be, for example, once a month, and to a limited quantity so that all your hard work is not undone! Virat’s cheat meal is Ram’s Chole Bhature from Rajouri Garden.
(5)Smoke & Drink
It is a no-brainer that smoking and drinking is deleterious to health. Virat abstains from both. For a drink, Virat prefers juice. In fact, Kohli even turned down a multi-crore soft drink endorsement simply because he does not consume aerated drinks.
