Festive season is the time when most of us ignore the diet charts and like to indulge in sweets, fried foods, desserts and all kinds of snacks. But once the festive season is over it becomes a bit difficult for us to lose those extra kilos we gained during this period. Detoxifying yourself will help you lose weight and stay healthy. So here are a few tips to plan a detox:
1) Avoid unhealthy carbohydrates:
Once you are on detox, it is important that you stop eating all unhealthy carbohydrates which include refined grains, starchy and processed foods. Refined Carbs are unhealthy because they have been processed and the natural fiber has been stripped out from them whereas the whole carbs are unprocessed and contain fiber found naturally in the food. Avoid refined carbs such as fruit juices, pastries, white bread, white pasta, white rice etc. Instead go for healthy whole carbs such as vegetables, whole fruits, legumes, potatoes, and whole grains.
2) Avoid salts and dressings
Sodium alters metabolism and changes the way our body absorbs fat. Excessive salt intake is associated with an increase in thirst and appetite which spikes daily calorie intake. So put the salt away. Also, avoid adding ketchup or dressings to your salads and sandwiches. Dressings like barbecue sauce, salad dressings, tomato sauce have high sugar and salt content. Instead, make your own salad dressings at home and use fresh herbs for flavor
3) Beat your sweet cravings with whole fruits
Snubbing sugar from your diet can be a bit difficult. So instead of eating sweets after your meals go for fresh whole fruits. Cookies, bars, cakes etc are loaded with empty calories which provide you with no nutritional value. Gorging on fruits will help to keep your cravings in control and also provide you with essential nutrients.
4) Drink lots of water
The way to detox is to drink lots of water. Although drinking a glass of water back to back can be a bit monotonous so find out ways to increase water content in your body. You may include fruits and vegetables which are rich in water content such as lettuce, capsicum, cucumber, melons, oranges, berries etc.
5) Avoid high-calorie drinks
Drinks like coffee, colas, alcohol, cocktails, mocktails, packaged juices contain a lot of sugar and artificial flavor. Instead go for healthy alternatives such as green tea, fruit smoothies, fresh fruit juice etc. to give your body a nutritional boost.
6) Eat home cooked meals
The easiest way to detox is by eating fresh and home-cooked meals. Restaurant meals are loaded with oil, ghee, spices, salt and sugar which makes it extremely unhealthy and high in calories. Instead, cook your own food at home. Aim to have two-three servings of home cooked vegetables, a dal, a bowl of yogurt and two rotis at each meal. Also, refrain from making instant noodles and instant soups.
7) Exercise daily
Apart from eating right, it is extremely important to exercise every day. Take some time out you’re your busy schedule and practice yoga or go for a brisk walk for 30-45 minutes. This will not only help you lose those extra kilos but will also tone your muscles and improve flexibility and body posture.
